This is a beautiful copy of the Colt Model 1848 Baby Dragoon Revolver imported by Allen Firearms of Santa Fe, New Mexico and made by Aldo Uberti of Italy. Leonard Allen founded Replica Arms in El Paso, TX in the early 1960s and sold the company in 1965. In the late 1970s, he got back into the replica business with a new firm named Western Arms which started with a colloboration with Aldo Uberti to build a quality affordable reproduction of the famous Hawken Rifle. Allen was always able to get the best quality from Uberti and this carried over to the revolvers they imported. Most of the ones we've encountered have superior wood to metal fit, great mechanics...not the roughness you get nowadays, and in many cases, little extras like silver plated grip straps just like those found on the original Colts. In the early 1980s, Winchester sued Allen over the name "Western" which had a line of trademarked line of ammunition with the same name. Allen lost the case and was forced to rename his company "Allen Firearms" which went on until around 1987 when it merged with Cimarron. The Allen Arms still carried the same quality as Western and like most Westerns, this 1848 has the silver plated gripstraps which are all but impossible to get nowadays from Uberti. The code on this one is AH which dates its manufacture to 1981. Unfired with about 99.9% original blue and case colors. Grips are nearly perfect showing just a few very light handling marks. Beautiful copy of the little Colt that earned quite a reputation during the California Gold Rush as a personal carry weapon. Many were used a few years later in the American Civil War. Look up what a new one costs by Uberti. You won't find this quality, the nice grips, the smooth action, or the silver plating that this 40+ year old one has.
