This is a beautiful example of a S&W Model No. 1, . After obtaining the Rollin White patent, the No. 1 was the world's first cartridge revolver with production on the 1st variation from 1857 to about 1860. This revolver has the more square-shaped frame with improved hammer and larger side plate aka the 2nd variation produced 1860-68. Serial number is in the 79,000 range. The No. 1 S&W proved to be quite popular with soldiers during the Civil War as a great many have been observed in the hands of troops proudly posing with these little revolvers in old photographs. S&W also spent quite a bit of time pursuing other firms infringing upon their patents in hopes of duplicating the success of this little revolver.
Overall, this one is in NRA Antique Excellent condition overall with 97% original silver plating remaining on the brass frame. As you can see from the photos, the silver has tarnished over the years to a rich pewter coloration. Barrel retains 90% strong bright original blue with excellent S&W barrel address. Cylinder shows only traces of original finish having flaked probably from powder residue over the years. It does however show fantastic patent dates including the 1855, 1859, and 1860 dates. Hammer shows most of its original toned case colors. Rosewood grips are perfect with 99% original piano varnish. Very Good bore with strong rifling and a few scattered pits. Action works nicely. Barrel to frame lockup is fairly tight with just a hint of play. A superior example of an early S&W tip-up revolver.
