This is a nicely engraved Smith & Wesson No. 1 3rd Issue Revolver that comes with a factory letter from Roy Jinks. In his letter, Mr. Jinks notes that this revolver "probably sold on November 29, 1871 and purchased by M.W. Robinson, New York City, NY, Smith & Wesson's largest distrubutor. The records indicate that this firearm was shipped with a 3-3/16 inch barrel, nickel finish, and smooth rosewood grips. This shipment was for 300 units. Mr. Robinson's company handled a lot of special engraved gun orders for the factory." The letter evokes a common theme amongst many engraved S&W's we've encountered over the years...that S&W's primary NYC retailer (which was also the home of America's largest school of engravers) seems to have often times taken care of the engraving.
Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Excellent. Barrel and frame have 99% very bright original nickel that is about as nice as you'll find on a 19th century revolver...it has never been scratched up or rolled around in a drawer. Cylinder shows some loss due to flaking, probably as a result of uncleaned powder residue. The cartridge ejector rod also shows flaking...exactly from where a spent case would also come into contact with powder residue. Otherwise, the nickel on this revolver is near perfect. Hammer shows original case colors that are faded and cloudy. Engraving shows floral vignettes in the Nimschke style...very well executed with punch dots in the relieved areas. Rosewood grips have 95% strong original varnish with slight losses along the bottom. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Good bore. Nice mechanics. A really attractive little engraved S&W. The photos simply don't do this one justice.
