This is an early S&W Frontier Revolver in 44-40 with 1-9/16" cylinder. The barrel measures 4" which is the shortest length offered in the 44 DA. Smith and Wesson produced just over 15,000 DA's in 44-40 (circa 1881 and offered in the S&W catalog until 1913) which they named the Frontier Model...meaning its cartridges could be used interchangeably with the Winchester 1873 and 1892. This particular gun has a low serial number in the 2,600 range with desirable blued finish and early style checkered walnut grips.
Overall condition grades to NRA Fine with 90% shiny original blue on frame except for 75% on left side plate due to flaking. There are some tap marks and dings around the trigger and trigger guard pins on left side of the frame from where someone acted carelessly trying to tap them out. See photos. Barrel blue is 80%. Original sights. Strong barrel address with original blue intact...and patent dates running from 1865 to 1880. Nice case colors on trigger with 25% on hammer...balance molted to a faded gray. Cylinder has flaked mostly to a gray patina with 20-25% original blue in the flutes, stop notches, down inside the relief cuts between the notches. Checkered walnut grips are in good condition...solid with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Checkering is worn but all there with a diamond pattern around the retaining screw. Mechanics in both Single and Double Action Modes. Self-rebounding ejector also works properly. Very Good Bore overall...still bright with good lands and grooves with a handful of scattered pits here and there.
