Colt 1849 Percussion Revolver

This is a Colt Model 1849 Percussion Revolver in .31 Caliber.  5" barrel with 5 shot cylinder, and small 2 line New York Address.  This one was built in 1860 just months prior to the beginning of the Civil War.  A great number of '49 Pockets were used as personal carry weapons by soldiers on both sides during the Civil War.  Serial number is in the 171,000 range.  All matching numbers except wedge which is a replacement.

Overall condition is NRA Antique Good with the metal worn to a light grey patina that shows some light roughness here and there but good sound surfaces overall with decent edges and very good markings.  If I were to guess, would say it was kept in a leather holster that got a little damp...because it doesn't show tremendous wear, has great cylinder scene, super grips, and a pretty good bore.  The cylinder still has 90% or better of its original roll engraved scene that's still strong.  Cylinder has good nipples.  Safety pins are a beat up but portions of all 5 are still showing on the back of the cylinder between the chambers. The barrel is marked "{ADDRESS SAML COLT <over> New York City}.  Left side of the barrel shows some light cleaning.  Left side of frame marked "COLT'S PATENT".  Brass trigger guard still retains 50% original silver plating while the backstrap shows 25% silver.  Walnut grips are in Fine condition with 70-80% original varnish remaining.  Perfect wood to metal fit with no chips, cracks, repairs, or signs of abuse to the bottom of the handle.  Action is in good working order.  Loading lever had just a tad of play...which translates to about 1 millimeter of lateral or side to side movement at the barrel catch just under the muzzle.  Very minor.  Barrel to frame lock-up is tight with no play or looseness.  Bore is very good with strong rifling, still bright in places, with some scattered light pits.  All in all, this Colt has got a few good things going for it and falls into an important time in American history.
