Read Parrot Shell dug near Resaca, GA

This is a Federal Read Parrot shell that was dug in the Snake Creek Gap near Resaca, GA.  Sherman's Army slipped past Confederate forces led by Johnston in May 1864 through the Snake Creek Gap but Union General Mcpherson, who led the movement, hesitated to take the town of Resaca which lies just South of the pass.  If he had acted quickly, he would have cut the Western and Atlantic Railroad line which fed Johnston's Army to the North in Dalton.  There would have been very little between him and Atlanta as well.  However, Mcpherson did not have good information, no cavalry, and simply over-estimated the small Confederate force at Resaca.  As a result, both sides rushed men and equipment to Resaca and the result was the first Battle of the Atlanta campaign in Mid-May 1864.
