US Model 1840 Cavalry Sword by Ames

This Model 1840 Cavalry Sword was manufactured by Ames of Chicopee, Mass in 1858.  It plenty of use but is all there and complete with its scabbard.  The blade is marked US/JH/1858 on one side and AMES MFG Co CHICOPEE MASS.  The brass end cap has the number "42" stamped on it and is marked with additional inspector markings, JH and what appears to be N.W.J.  The handle shows plenty of use with about 2/3 of the original brass wire intact.  The leather is worn with an age crack in the wooden grip underneath.  Still, everything is there and original.  Both the brass guard and handle are tight with no looseness or play.  Nice blade that is semi-lustrous with no pitting or signs of sharpening.  The scabbard is intact with throat, drag, and both harness rings intact.  The lower half of the scabbard is lightly pitted.  A good example of a slightly pre-Civil War Ames "Wristbreaker".
