This is a nice example of the early Model 1833 saber that was issued to the state of North Carolina during the 1830's. Top of the quillion is marked "NC" with inspector marking "ws". The ricasso area is marked with the inspector initials "TW" and hand-engraved "N.P. Ames Cutler Springfield 1837" . The left side of the blade is also engraved " United States " over olive branches The blade is mostly a soft grey patina with some staining and light oxidation. Edge shows some minor nicks, but no chips. The leather wrap on the grips is wearing thin in spots with all the original wire intact . Grips show some shrinkage within the framework of the guard...a little play is evident but not excessively loose. Brass Guard has great patina with border-line engraving and stepped at the pommel. No scabbard.
